Farm Bureau at the Clark County Fair!

The Nevada and Clark County Farm Bureau booth at the Clark County Fair was popular in the Small Animal Pavilion. Cindy & Jim Hardy, Zach Allen, Kaluna and Jenifer Aki, Irene Barlow, Stephanie Licht, and many others put alot of work into creating the exhibit. Their hard work paid off!
The Farm Bureau recently bought Maggie The Milking Cow, she was displayed at the fair. Maggie gave kids the opportunity to have a real hands on milking experience (without the danger of flying hoofs.)

Another part of the exhibit were the games and activities. There were several to participate in, and Cindy had a lot of candy to give out to kids! There were two spin the wheel games. One was a large wheel with a map of Nevada and its' counties next to it. When the wheel spun, it would land on a product that was produced in Nevada. The big map next to it was actually a light up board. The kids would light up all the counties that produced that product. Suckers were given to those that played the game.

The small spin the wheel game had the new MyPlate on it. It would land on a food group, the kids would learn how much of that food group they should eat a day. They were asked what their favorite food in that group was, and then they would find where that food group was grown in Nevada. They were rewarded with fruit snacks.
One of the popular games was plinko. It was called, What Do I Produce? On each plinko coin was a picture of an animal or plant. The participants would place the wooden coin at the top of the board and watch as the coin zig-zagged off of pegs, down into a pocket. Each of the pockets were labeled with the product of animal or plant. If the participant was lucky, the coin would land in the right commodity. If not, they tried again! Bubbles and Fortune Cookies with farm facts inside were given out for this game.

Cindy had ordered farm fact activity books to hand out to kids. She put a label on the back with pictures of animals, then placed larger animals around the Small Animal Building. While the kids were touring the building, they would look for the hidden animals. Each hidden animal had a letter on it. The children were to write the letter that cooresponded with the animal on their booklet. When all the letters had been found, it spelled MAGGIE THE MILKING COW. This activity was extremely popular for the elementary school kids. Cindy ordered 500 books, and they were all gone by Friday afternoon. The fair had just begun on Thursday and would go till Sunday! She will know for next year to order a lot more books.

The goal was to teach kids more about aggriculture in Nevada. As the kids played the games they learned what an important role it is in our state and how it affects their own lives. Thank you to everyone that volunteered to help out at the booth!

  1. Spin the wheel game is such a great idea on educating the kids! Who would have ever thought of such a good learning tool. I will definitely have to utilize that idea down the road. GREAT post!
