Food Check-Out Week

Food Check-Out Week 2012

Friday, February 24

The AFBF Womans Leadership Committee was in charge of Food Check-Out Week which was February 22-24. Food Check-Out Week is held to celebrate the abundance and safety of food. This includes...

  • Helping consumers find solutions to eating healthy on a stretched budget.
  • America's farmers and ranchers are committed to producing safe, abundant and healthy food
  • Through charitable donations to local Ronald McDonald Houses (and other charities) during Food Check-Out Week

Clark County FB Womans Leadership Committee members chose to celebrate Food Check-Out Week on Friday February 24. Cindy Hardy, Irene Barlow, and Stephanie Bunker set up a booth in front of Lins Grocery store in Overton. At the booth there were two games to play, recipe cards to hand out, and coloring books to give away. The first game was "Spin the Wheel," the wheel had the USDA's MyPlate on it and whichever food group it landed on, the spinner got a treat from that food group. This game was to teach about the new program USDA is using. Instead of a food pyramid, it's now called the MyPlate. To learn more about MyPlate go to www.choosemyplate.gov

The second game they played was "Plink-o." This was a board with pegs on it and pockets at the bottom. The goal of the game was to drop a wooden circle piece at the top of the board and let it fall through the pegs to one of the bottom pockets. Each wooden piece had a picture of a farm animal or crop and the pockets had pictures of what those produced. The goal of the game was to land each piece into the correct pocket.

Cindy, Irene, and Stephanie had a good time talking to people and getting information to the public about MyPlate and ways to eat healthy on a stretched budget.

Irene and Cindy also went to the Ronald McDonald house in Las Vegas and presented them with a check of $500
