2014 YF&R Elections!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On June 10th the Clark County Young Farmers and Ranchers held their first official election for the President and Vice President duties. Congratulations to Spencer Bunker the new President and Noah Reid Vice President for the unanimous vote into office! There were no other nominations for the candidacy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Farm Bureau and YF&R groups thanks the outgoing President Mica Leatham and Vice President Dan Bevan for their hours of service and dedication to the program. In their presidency they have been able to recruit more members to YF&R and incorporate more activities to the program. Including Dinner and Rodeo at the Clark County Fair, Big Buck Contest, and the Harvest For All Food Drive. Leatham said at the meeting, "We have good members that are excited with hobby farms." He continued, "We wanted to get membership up, get invovled and continue to educate people." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Leatham had some ideas for the future of the group, he said, "There are thing I didn't get done in my presidency but would like to see go on to the next," the new President Spencer Bunker embraced those ideas. Bunker said, "I have goals and ideas to inform people, continue recruiting members, and doing things we have in place and to do them well." Some of those ideas include; holding various demonstrations for the members to be educated in that concern their hobby farms or other niches they want to pursue, and invite high school seniors leaving FFA to join YF&R.</div>

The Clark County YF&R also were delighted to have the new Nevada Farm Bureau Executive Director Clay McCauley and Jessica Fagundes the new Director of Communications come to the meeting on June 10th to get to know the members and talk about their goals and ideas for the program. McCauley emphasized the importance for the YF&R members to visit Carson City and Washington D.C. in order to better understand the legislature and make connections with those legislators. "My plan is to get the Young Farmers & Ranchers to get to the legislator, there is nothing better than the Legislators talking to you the Young Farmers & Ranchers."</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fagundes introduced herself to the group and discussed growing the program and staying connected through blogs and social media. She requested photos of events in Clark County that she can't attend in the future. Fagundes said, "Listening to what you guys are doing you are hitting all the bases of what Nevada Farm Bureau and American Farm Bureau are hoping for."</div>

Jim Hardy newly elected President of the Clark County Farm Bureau, and Mica Leatham the CC YF&R President of 2 years have worked together to grow the CC YF&R program. In the last few year the program has grown and seen success. On Tuesday evening Feb. 25th the group went over the activities they have been involved in, namely the Big Buck Contest, Harvest for All Food Drive, and involvement in the Clark County Fair. All of which have turned out to be more successful every year. </div>

Hey Clark County!</h3>
<h3>
Let's show up to support the Young Farmers and Ranchers at the Harvest 4 All event in front of Lin's Grocery in Overton. It will be held February 1st from 9:00-3:00 and all food collected will go toward the Cappalappa Family Recourse Center to help needy families in the area. </h3>

the community and give a sense of pride and joy.” He continued, “The community
see’s people reaching out and we give them the ability to help as well.” </h4>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Nevada Farm Bureau and the Nevada Department of Agriculture
presented the Southern Nevada Agriculture Conference in Las Vegas last weekend
at the Santa Fe Station. This was the first time in Nevada Farm Bureau history
that the Annual Agricultural Conference was held in Las Vegas and Clark County
was well represented there. Zach Allen the Director of Communications for
Nevada Farm Bureau said, “It went well having a joint Southern Nevada
Agricultural Conference with the Department of Agriculture. It gave an
opportunity to share new ideas and make new friends with a variety of people
throughout the state.” Allen explained that the Farm Bureau convention provides
an opportunity for farmers and ranchers to discuss and create policy that
benefits farmers and ranchers throughout the state.”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Conference began on Thursday where the attendee’s were
able to sit in on several workshops that pertained to agriculture and growing a
business. Logandale resident Cindy Hardy, who is also the Chair of the Woman’s
Committee, found the classes informative and helpful. She said, “They were to
help farmers get ideas to better their farming or ranching businesses.” Carol
Bishop the Moapa Valley Cooperative Extension Educator taught a class with the
Nevada Farm Bureau Vice President and Panaca farmer, Paul Mathews on Business
Planning for a Farm or Ranch. Bishop explained to the class the importance of
writing down expenses and creating a plan to show profit. Bishop told the group
she offers her help to those looking to improve their agricultural business.
Mathews gave an example of his experience to make his farming business
profitable. Through the help from a Farm Service Agency (FSA) loan and taking a
class to better manage his business he was able to turn a profit after a few
years of patient and documented farming. Other classes during the conference
focused on agronomy or making soil fertile as well as exporting into global
markets, selling local, indoor growing, farm/ranch marketing, and food safety. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Friday the Nevada Farm Bureau group gathered together to
discuss policies in which they would take to the Nevada State Legislature.
There was also a Discussion Meet held by the Young Farmers & Ranchers
group. The Discussion Meet was a friendly competition consisting of a series of
formal discussions on assigned topics. Jamie Perkins, former Young Farmer
Rancher Chair explained, “They are formatted after a (Farm Bureau) Board
Meeting and discussion. This prepares them to lead discussions on policy and
delegating important issues to lead and share ideas.” </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">4 Moapa Valley residents participated in this year’s
Discussion Meets; Kaluna Aki, Ashley Bunker, Stephanie Bunker, and Kaley Sproul
although Sproul was representing the county she attends school in. Most of the
candidates from Moapa Valley had never participated in an event such as this
before but they found the meet to be a good experience for them. Aki said, “I
liked how we could meet with people in the state of Nevada to discuss different
views.” Aki recalled being quite nervous as were all the contestants but
despite the nerves they were able to contribute to a good discussion. Ashley
Bunker said, “It was good to have the opportunity to learn more about
agriculture and discuss other Farm Bureau issues.” Bunker also said she learned
a lot about public speaking and was able to meet a lot of people and friends.
Ashley and Stephanie Bunker went on to participate in the second round of
discussion that night but to their relief they did not continue to the final
round. The winners of the final round were Cory <span class="null"><span style="color: #333333;">Shrecengost for 1<span style="font-size: x-small;">st</span>,</span></span> Bobby Fagundes

The next generation of farmers and ranchers from around the country assembled together in Phoenix Arizona to connect with each other and learn how to improve the family farm. 6 members of the Clark County Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer’s & Rancher’s organization (YF&R) attended the National Conference February 9-11. Those 6 included Lucas and Lacey Tom, Betsy Hardy, Carly Alexander, Trina Dalley, and Stephanie Bunker. <br />
<br />
The group of Farmers and Ranchers were able to take tours of farms, ranches, and dairy’s in Phoenix. The tours showed great examples of successful working farms that integrated tradition and change. One stop along the tour was an impressive dairy that consisted of 28,000 cows, and 2 milking carousel’s that hold 80 cows each. A wheat farm had found it’s own niche in the business world in order to survive. After growing and harvesting wheat stocks they have a contract with Hobby Lobby and Pottery Barn to put together bouquets and wreaths of wheat for decorative pieces. <br />
<br />
The convention covered two types of topics, becoming a political advocate, and gearing towards the future of farming and ranching. These topics were taught through a series of speakers and classes. They heard from the former Navy Commander of the USS Benfold, Michael Abrashoff. He shared his experiences of bringing the Benfold from one of the very worst in the fleet, to the absolute best. The farmers and ranchers learned leadership qualities that can help their business be successful. Another highlighted topic was part of the theme of the conference, “Celebrating Tradition, Embracing Change.” To bring this point home they invited a professor of agriculture economics at Ohio State University, Dr. Bernard Erven to speak to them. He exaggerated that embracing change is vital to farm life. <br />
<br />
Lacey Tom found networking to be one of the highlights of the conference. She saw how connections could be made through social media via Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. She said, “The purpose is to connect with Young Farmers & Ranchers across the country, it’s a great opportunity to network with people that have similar situations, or to see another side of the market industry.”<br />
<br />
Cindy Hardy, a member of Clark County Farm Bureau commented on how Young Farmers & Ranchers benefit from being apart of the organization. She said, “It gives them leadership opportunities and a role in Farm Bureau. Not only are they are being made aware of agriculture, but also the political side of it as well.” The Farm Bureau encourages its members to reach out to their legislators, bringing politics to the local level and making a difference on Capitol Hill. <br />

<span lang="EN">Food Drive’s don’t just happen during the holidays, the Clark County Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) got together on Saturday February 2nd to collect food for needy families. YF&R hosted the Harvest For All event in an effort to help families in the community. In order to achieve this goal they donated the food to Cappalapa Recourse Center. From 9:00 am to 4:00 pm members of YF&R set up a booth in front of Lin’s handing out a flyer containing food items that were needed. The system worked well for the members of the community to give back, with the list in hand they were able to buy something to donate right away and didn’t have to go through to much trouble. This also gave Cappalapa food recently purchased food without the danger of being expired. <br />

The Young Farmers & Ranchers collected enough food to fill the bed of 2 pick up trucks, or about 1,400 lbs. Ramen noodles, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, ketchup, and mustard were big hit items donated. Noah Reid was an organizer of the event, he said, “Lin’s workers saw a major difference on the shelves, they want us to let them know what we will be asking for next year so they can stock up on those items.” Mica Leatham, President of YF&R commented that the food drive was good for many organizations and members of the community. It affected Lin’s business, it helped grow Cappalapa’s food stores, it was good for the needy families, and good for the YF&R organization.<br />

In an effort to combine service and educate people about agriculture, they had some fun things on display. A tractor parked out front got a few curious looks and they had Maggie the Milking Cow out for demonstrations. Maggie is a plastic cow that simulates milking a cow. Leatham said, “We wanted to combine service and agriculture. It also gave us an opportunity to get club members involved in the program.” Leatham explained that he is working to expand YF&R and get members to play and active role in it. Members of the Young Farmers & Ranchers would like to thank Lin’s, and members of the community for being so willing to give their time and money to helping make this possible. <br />

<h2 align="center">
<span style="color: #990000;">City Meets The Farm</span></h2>
Moapa Valley High School’s Ag Farm was filled with awe and curiosity last week as the 2nd graders from Sandy Miller Elementary School learned about life on the farm. Instead of sending a lot of kids at one time, the Las Vegas school broke them up into three days, sending kids out on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday last week. The FFA and Agriculture teacher, Denise O’Tool said, “Last year when they came it was a big group of 500, so we decided to break it up and do smaller groups this year.” She found the new system to work smoother and could talk to the kids on an individual basis. According to O’Tool, the purpose of the kids going to the Ag farm was to teach them about food and where it comes from. The FFA and Ag students ran the show, the high school students researched and planned their presentations for the children. As they gave their presentation they included interesting facts about that particular item. <br />

There were 4 stations for the children to rotate through. At one station the kids had their picture taken on a tractor and then got to go see the chickens. Students from Ag class let them go inside the chicken coop and pick out an egg. The kids also went inside the green house to see the hydroponic plants the farm is growing. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Roo’s N More Petting Zoo brought a few of their animals to show off. At this station they were able to pet a tortoise, kookaburra, baby kangaroo, and a caracal kitten. For many of the children, this was their favorite station. One little girls said that she liked it because the only animals she ever sees are dogs, cats, and snakes. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwYz7eVn-HzCTFqWYY-q10b_6wUsFlnus8X56xiZd0oi6APtSAoj6LF99-4D9xAecJx14jlFIqVt37uEUpoGmCDSR2QxlsPO68MY0I8k6RmTHcOoWf424ieeUHadwlwHinKFJJ9lV6Sn4/s1600/CIMG6165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwYz7eVn-HzCTFqWYY-q10b_6wUsFlnus8X56xiZd0oi6APtSAoj6LF99-4D9xAecJx14jlFIqVt37uEUpoGmCDSR2QxlsPO68MY0I8k6RmTHcOoWf424ieeUHadwlwHinKFJJ9lV6Sn4/s320/CIMG6165.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
At another station the 2nd graders got to learn how to churn butter, and start seed germination. Alex Jones had prepared “seed babies” for each child. Jones had began germinating the seeds by pre soaking them. The kids put their seeds in a small tube and were supposed to wear them around their necks. The warmth of their body keeps the seeds warm and allows them to sprout. Jones said, “It takes 2 to 3 days for them to sprout and the kids can watch the seeds grow.” <br />
<br />
The Clark County Farm Bureau brought material to hand out to the students that taught about farms and where food comes from. Each child received a packet with a coloring book or magazine. The CC Farm Bureau also brought along their plastic milking cow. Maggie the Milking Cow simulates milking a cow without all the dangers of getting kicked. <br />
<br />

Then the kids got to go see real cows, FFA students Kenna McMurray and Leah Bradbury explained to the kids that the cows at the Ag farm are for meat and don’t get milked. They also showed them a pile of corn that gets fed to the cows and then the kids got to see the pumpkin patch. <br />

Bringing school kids out on a field trip to the Ag Farm is something the Agriculture Program and MVHS tries to do every year. O’Tool said she is hoping to write a grant to pay for the school buses to make the journey out here. She wants students to have a good experience with agriculture.<br />

<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Nevada and Clark County Farm Bureau booth at the Clark County Fair was popular in the Small Animal Pavilion. Cindy & Jim Hardy, Zach Allen, Kaluna and Jenifer Aki, Irene Barlow, Stephanie Licht, and many others put alot of work into creating the exhibit. Their hard work paid off! </div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMLojg4_ZvWztP3mAWxAH5XBA8FRe9h4F_VTyVX-YGh88XKl2ZIGPm93wnpwrSy0-El15sFBCQv0A5S8r-fVWDRJsFjaGznvsjXjFU2tVF9VUOq0SAYCdvPhuaJRt5nkeaSzqTWAHXsqk/s1600/100_7110%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMLojg4_ZvWztP3mAWxAH5XBA8FRe9h4F_VTyVX-YGh88XKl2ZIGPm93wnpwrSy0-El15sFBCQv0A5S8r-fVWDRJsFjaGznvsjXjFU2tVF9VUOq0SAYCdvPhuaJRt5nkeaSzqTWAHXsqk/s320/100_7110%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></a></div></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Farm Bureau recently bought Maggie The Milking Cow, she was displayed at the fair. </div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Another part of the exhibit were the games and activities. There were several to participate in, and Cindy had a lot of candy to give out to kids! There were two spin the wheel games. One was a large wheel with a map of Nevada and its' counties next to it. When the wheel spun, it would land on a product that was produced in Nevada.The big map next to it was actually a light up board. The kids would light up all the counties that produced that product. Suckers were given to those that played the game.</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_doSEqV0P5bEk8ul0oNVkz_FJgvodddI5ez_JFVGmqtdzmsfoCsJKbuh74WxxPYVVbVzI3RlyO5PdzIG2dnEBWSkQsESA68SaZpwfN0YIZ1RleT2yjLzgYYiXsVSRHO1OOa2Dr7kxN8M/s1600/100_7061%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_doSEqV0P5bEk8ul0oNVkz_FJgvodddI5ez_JFVGmqtdzmsfoCsJKbuh74WxxPYVVbVzI3RlyO5PdzIG2dnEBWSkQsESA68SaZpwfN0YIZ1RleT2yjLzgYYiXsVSRHO1OOa2Dr7kxN8M/s320/100_7061%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>The small spin the wheel game had the new MyPlate on it. It would land on a food group, the kids would learn how much of that food group they should eat a day. They were asked what their favorite food in that group was, and then they would find where that food group was grown in Nevada. They were rewarded with fruit snacks. </div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One of the popular games was plinko. It was called, What Do I Produce? On each plinko coin was a picture of an animal or plant. The participants would place the wooden coin at the top of the board and watch as the coin zig-zagged off of pegs, down into a pocket. Each of the pockets were labeled with the product of animal or plant. If the participant was lucky, the coin would land in the right commodity. If not, they tried again! Bubbles and Fortune Cookies with farm facts inside were given out for this game.</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixB3FCXmYCkfLkcQOACsgO8x2PgV1kRvWn61P4R9zHAdD57qH9uVpAa6TIWJ5pYUF3US7uJFOEMCP50S5eeM-1yFv2T7orCykGnxYVtzEjxRVB4gESDmTEFMVxiqwFoRrG2odzRJZcBeg/s1600/100_7042%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixB3FCXmYCkfLkcQOACsgO8x2PgV1kRvWn61P4R9zHAdD57qH9uVpAa6TIWJ5pYUF3US7uJFOEMCP50S5eeM-1yFv2T7orCykGnxYVtzEjxRVB4gESDmTEFMVxiqwFoRrG2odzRJZcBeg/s320/100_7042%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Cindy had ordered farm fact activity books to hand out to kids. She put a label on the back with pictures of animals, then placed larger animals around the Small Animal Building. While the kids were touring the building, they would look for the hidden animals. Each hidden animal had a letter on it. The children were to write the letter that cooresponded with the animal on their booklet. When all the letters had been found, it spelled MAGGIE THE MILKING COW. This activity was extremely popular for the elementary school kids. Cindy ordered 500 books, and they were all gone by Friday afternoon. The fair had just begun on Thursday and would go till Sunday! She will know for next year to order a lot more books.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRQ0Yfu08EaKhjupL_ZGtX3NfXxOlA045wJjSAU-TzF_BeU4X5EsslaXlqhUnVdg4cQDdf6mmPky-ZV5tAILWDRrK3kqu8pAxQArRNGfeLd9W6URxz-gy-1XAghwE1vsd2BQay7WEQxZA/s1600/100_7088%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRQ0Yfu08EaKhjupL_ZGtX3NfXxOlA045wJjSAU-TzF_BeU4X5EsslaXlqhUnVdg4cQDdf6mmPky-ZV5tAILWDRrK3kqu8pAxQArRNGfeLd9W6URxz-gy-1XAghwE1vsd2BQay7WEQxZA/s320/100_7088%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>The goal was to teach kids more about aggriculture in Nevada. As the kids played the games they learned what an important role it is in our state and how it affects their own lives. Thank you to everyone that volunteered to help out at the booth!<br />

Glen Hardy being president, took charge of the meeting. The first item of business was the financial report given by Jim Hardy. He went over the budget for the year so far and discussed what changes could be made for next years budget. Jim explained that membership fee's are down this year which means there won't be as much money coming in. Another thing in the budget was to get Maggy the Milking Cow. Jim informed us that the cow had been ordered and they were waiting for it to arrive. <br />
<br />
Next item of business was the booth at the fair, Kaluna Aki attended the meeting. He is in charge of getting the small animal building organized with different vendors and where they will have their booths. Kaluna explained that the Farm Bureau booth would be in the same location as last year but will also have more space. He also had drawn a sketch of a background he can build for the Farm Bureau. <br />
<br />
Glen turned the time over to the Young Farmer Rancher organization to tell about the activities they have done, Stephanie Bunker told about her trip to Heber UT and Jim said he would like to organize a meeting for the YF&R during the fair. An upcoming activity in Dryer was also discussed. <br />
<br />
The Women's Leadership Committee was next to tell of their activities, which entailed donating $500 to the Ronald McDonald house, and Food Check-Out Week. Next month they will be reading agriculture books at schools and then donating those books to the school. The Women's Leadership Committee Conference will be coming to Las Vegas in April of 2013 and Cindy told of ideas she has for tours that will be offered. <br />
<br />
Hank Combs told about what is going on at the State office. They are moving policy development forward, and have three new brand inspectors. They are Susan Pulsipher, Tanya Barlow, and Ralph Frymire. The state FB is also putting together a Political Action Committee, or PAC, they recruited Lindsey Dalley and Rick Eidie from Clark County to be members of the committee.<br />
<br />
Bob Combs told of how Andrew Zimmerman came to R.C. farms on Feb. 15. He has a Television show where he goes around the world eating exotic things. They showed how pork goes from the farm to the buffet. R.C. Farms roasted a pig for Andrew to eat. <br />
<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Clark County FB Womans Leadership Committee members chose to celebrate Food Check-Out Week on Friday February 24. Cindy Hardy, Irene Barlow, and Stephanie Bunker set up a booth in front of Lins Grocery store in Overton. At the booth there were two games to play, recipe cards to hand out, and coloring books to give away. The first game was "Spin the Wheel," the wheel had the USDA's MyPlate on it and whichever food group it landed on, the spinner got a treat from that food group. This game was to teach about the new program USDA is using. Instead of a food pyramid, it's now called the MyPlate. The goal of the game was to land each piece into the correct pocket. </div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

The members from Clark County were Mica & Shelbie Leatham, Hannah Hardy, Lacy Sproul, and myself (Stephanie Bunker.) Jamie & Grant Perkins who are head chair of YF&R were there along with Stephanie Licht and a few others from Nevada.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY5a0BPPQWT9WCtH3eGQcQ21mBDfrj3YSlwSSDEkn60dXgFIoNNvAYleZoK3Tccq1ok42aHjdILV5vkXz114PA5RK4sG91vLiIR6zzCKCyAcsK9I3rHzTCiVvBl1e9mfhpA-9mq58d0y4/s1600/IMG_4166.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY5a0BPPQWT9WCtH3eGQcQ21mBDfrj3YSlwSSDEkn60dXgFIoNNvAYleZoK3Tccq1ok42aHjdILV5vkXz114PA5RK4sG91vLiIR6zzCKCyAcsK9I3rHzTCiVvBl1e9mfhpA-9mq58d0y4/s320/IMG_4166.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div>We learned a lot about how having a strong YF&R organization can help its members by providing information that is useful to them. There were several speakers at the convention, first of which was Kim Farah. She is the LDS Public Relations Representative and she spoke to us about how to get your message across to the media more effectively. Not just on the internet through social sites, but giving an "Elevator pitch" to journalists. (An elevator pitch is giving your story in the time you can ride in an elevator with someone.) Kim talked about telling your story so that people can connect and understand. She told how overworked and underpaid journalists are, so you need to make their job easier by giving them their "Quotable quote." That way your story can be told efficiently and accurately. It is important to be proactive by spreading the message, not just answering a question. And also reactive, redirecting a negative story into "Your story." Kim emphasized that you are in control of what message gets sent to the media. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3cy41SRFUz35J9EKv_Fyf6zeHT3KU-kO9WDtk_UJr8EtwzDbAoneAr7NsRnU06y1o8on8UR7nhCRuBzxaeudESWXoyPERvrSLvVML2elpOu4HElfIZdZxkHmzPRjyIhcmv1uNveQukKI/s1600/IMG_4151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3cy41SRFUz35J9EKv_Fyf6zeHT3KU-kO9WDtk_UJr8EtwzDbAoneAr7NsRnU06y1o8on8UR7nhCRuBzxaeudESWXoyPERvrSLvVML2elpOu4HElfIZdZxkHmzPRjyIhcmv1uNveQukKI/s320/IMG_4151.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div align="center">(Kim Farah and her victim or volunteer)</div><div align="center"></div>At the convention there were several couple spotlights, where the head chairs of the county's in Utah would do a slide show of their family and what they do, whether it be farming or ranching and in many cases both. This helped members get to know the leaders in the organization better and what they did to be involved in agriculture. There were also many door prizes given away everytime the group reconvened or broke up for another activity. Shelbie Leatham was excited to win a beanie and an IFA gift card! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQkHYmiptmdEdZKSMdDkJXbvjHNr-LZtCvTg6PTaFHT7CrhNW2gAzDpzm714DLQyGWaQjhRO8TITdS0ZhobBeh-B68B53ncgrtGwDMJIg3_RRY9WnVlYy48udALARtCbrfYGLQy8r7Uvs/s1600/IMG_4163.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQkHYmiptmdEdZKSMdDkJXbvjHNr-LZtCvTg6PTaFHT7CrhNW2gAzDpzm714DLQyGWaQjhRO8TITdS0ZhobBeh-B68B53ncgrtGwDMJIg3_RRY9WnVlYy48udALARtCbrfYGLQy8r7Uvs/s320/IMG_4163.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">(Mica, Shelbie, and Baxter)</div><div align="center"></div>A real special treat was entertainment by Baxter Black. He told stories and poems on Friday, and entertained while we ate breakfast on saturday morning. There were several classes on Saturday, the first hour of classes to choose from were YF&R Competitions:Application & Orientation, Farm To Retail: Heber Valley Cheese Plant, and FSA Programs Beginning Farmer Loans. <br />
<div style="text-align: left;"></div>I chose to attend the Farm To Retail class, this was Grant & Russ Kohler telling their story of looking to expand or find a niche for their dairy farm. They chose to find a niche for lack of space of expanding in Heber. So they started a cheese plant and they use their milk from the dairy to make the cheese. Grant & Russ told of their experiences going from the farmer to breaking into the retail market. To say the least, they made a leap of faith that everything would work out. For example, would there be a market for a cheese plant in Heber? Or, would their cheese even taste good? Russ explained (or warned) that whatever your estimated cost is for your project, TRIPLE it! Russ & Grant have had their cheese plant open since April of 2011 and have been very succesful, even after some set backs they continue to learn and grow. <br />
<br />

</div><div align="center"></div>The second hour of classes included, You Have A Story To Tell, Grazing Improvement Program, and FSA Programs Beginning Farmer Loans. I chose to attend the class, Grazing Improvememnt Program. This helped us understand the importand of having a Grazing Improvement Program implemented. The speaker explained that graze land isn't overstocked, but undermanaged. He explained there are different pasture systems, for expamle, the one pasture system, the three pasture system, and the twenty pasture system. The speaker showed pictures of each system and each pasture starting from one to twenty continued to look more healthy. This showed that it is better for the land and the animals, including wildlife, if a twenty pasture system is used. He also explained that there are key principles of Grazing Management, it provides restfor recovery, increases diversity and plant selection, improve water infiltration, allow management flexibility, and increases wildlife abundance and diversity. The speaker showed data to support these principles. He also explained that controlled burns are beneficial because they help undergrowth, selection, plant growth, and density. <br />
<br />
After the classes, everyone met back in a group and concluded the conference. There was also the opportunity to tour the Heber Valley Artisan Cheese Plant after the conference ended. Which I did with Mica, Shelbie, and Hannah and had the opportunity to learn about cheese making. We also got to taste many of the different flavors of cheese they made. Which included smoked cheese curd, dill pickle cheese curd, salsa cheese, a garlic cheese spread, fried cheese, cheese with jam on it, and many more exotic flavors. <br />

</div><div align="center"></div>The Utah YF&R Conference provided us "Nevadans" with a better knowledge and motivation to grow our YF&R organization. We discussed different ways we can help the organization help the young farmers and ranchers of nevada. Our goals for the future of YF&R are to get more members involved and to make more people aware of the organization so that we may be a support group for each other and for the future of agriculture. <br />
<br />
I would like to thank the Utah YF&R for the invitation to attend their conference and giving us the opportunity to learn so much.<br />

The tables were filled with people eating and visiting. Dinner was provided by our favorite cook Rick Eide. He made a selection of chicken, stuffing, dutch oven potatoes, and green beans. I think everyone would agree it was delicious, thanks Rick!<br />
<br />
Once everyone had their fill of food, Glen Hardy started the meeting off by thanking everyone for being their and introduced the Country Insurance team. Which included Chris Kemmer, Jeff McMean, and Quincy Walker. Chris Kemmer was given the floor to talk about Country Insurance. First off he thanked the policy owners and told them that Country Insurance was holding strong in 2011. Chris insured (no pun intended) everyone that while the financial market is weary, Country Insurance has invested conservatively to survive.<br />

Glen also gave Doug Busselman the chance to give us a report on what was happening with the Nevada Legislature. He said that 2011 has been a successful year, and that this year they measured their success on what they could prevent from happening. For example, there was a proposal to do away with the College of Aggriculture but they were able to keep it going. With this college students can learn more about aggriculture and/or get into the bussiness of aggriculture. Doug also talked about the Triple Trailer Bill they kept from passing, which prevented hay transporters to tow three trailers at one time, which hurts the hay industry. The wild horse and water rights were contriversal also. Doug mentioned that next year could be a challenge since there will be alot of "newbies" in the legislature. There was also a tax increase in one of the new bills they weren't happy with but overall it sounded like they were successful in keeping some bills from passing. Thank you Doug for working hard to protect our rights!<br />
<br />
Hank Combs was next to stand, he mentioned that the NV Farm Bureau made its quota for the year, at least one more member than last year! Hank had the opportunity to go to the National Meeting in Atlanta Georgia and there Nevada Farm Bureau won two awards. He then talked about the program services that would be offered in 2012. This last year they were able to provide $500 off a new dodge truck, they weren't able to keep that offer. Instead they have a deal with GMC, Chevy, and Buick to get $500 off of qualifying 2011/2012 models. This will provide good benefits to the Farm Bureau members.<br />
<br />
Glen also turned the floor over to Irene Barlow, who told about the Boot Camp she attended in Washington D.C. She let everyone know that any woman in the Farm Bureau can apply for the Boot Camp and she highly recommended it. If anyone is interested contact Stephanie Licht for an application. Irene also told of some up coming events. Which includes the Young Farmer Rancher Food Drive, Food Checkout Week, a booth at the Clark County Fair, the Video Contest, and the 4-H Kick-Off. Irene also told of books about aggriculture the Womans Committee is gathering to donate to schools in Clark County. Those attending were Glen and Shirley Hardy, Rick Huskins, Bob and Hank Combs, Blake and Kessa Stratton, Irene Barlow, Jim and Derek Hardy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNpgrf2wEngDAxHZ7T2zOrqCiOiakir15qdJzZZVQiU0Boj_oc9crBf5PTVM9ZMojGBKDtcnh6sbBzznlBQ-bgDeZUJhI2YQwqwea_ujW3eC4BrpLV_Bt3zoACsT0ESucggIcY5JYyTU0/s1600/2011-10-12+19.32.09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNpgrf2wEngDAxHZ7T2zOrqCiOiakir15qdJzZZVQiU0Boj_oc9crBf5PTVM9ZMojGBKDtcnh6sbBzznlBQ-bgDeZUJhI2YQwqwea_ujW3eC4BrpLV_Bt3zoACsT0ESucggIcY5JYyTU0/s320/2011-10-12+19.32.09.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Glen being the President of the FB directed the meeting and gave the floor to Jim Hardy for the financial report. He read through the budget and expenses of 2011, then proceeded to create a new budget for 2012 based on the 2011 budget. Money was added in areas that they thought would need it for the upcoming year. One of those areas is the National Conference of FB held in Hawaii, the budget would need to be added to in order to help with expenses of travel and board. <br />
<br />
Jim also brought up an item the Farm Bureau would want to raise money and budget for. Its Maggie the Real Milking Cow. This artificial cow gives a real hands on learning experience. It has pumps inside the utters which give children the simulation of milking a cow. This cow can be used in classrooms, at the fair, or any other presentation the FB might give. Concerns were raised about how to transport the 200 lb cow and where to store her. The board budgeted in some money for the cow and will also try and get grants and donations to purchase Maggie. To learn more about Maggie go to <a href="http://therealmilkingcow.com/">http://therealmilkingcow.com/</a> and <a href="http://www.fiberstock.com/">http://www.fiberstock.com/</a><br />
<a href="http://therealmilkingcow.com/images/photos.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img alt="Maggie photos" border="0" height="512" src="http://therealmilkingcow.com/images/photos.jpg" width="330" /></a><br />
<br />
There were concerns whether to budget in donations the the 4H and FFA, in the past $600 was budgeted in but they were already over their budget and money wasn't donated the last 2 years. It was decided that if the 4H and FFA had a project they could come to the Farm Bureau with a presentation and ask for the money. This would give the kids some interaction with the FB.<br />
<br />
A motion was made by Bob Combs for the 2012 Budget and it was unanimously agreed upon. It wasn't five minuetes and the motion was ammended adding $300 to the Western Leadership Conference. Everyone also agreed with the ammendment. <br />
<br />

Glen then turned to floor to Irene Barlow to tell about the Womens Committee Conference. This was in Baltimore Maryland and she was joined by Cindy Hardy and Stephanie Licht. There were many activities including mini classes, which were Irene's favorite. Irene was also selected to attend a Womens Committee Boot Camp in Washingtion D.C. she was one of 16 in the nation selected. This boot camp was to teach and give hands on learning about public speaking. Irene was placed infront of a microphone and a camara while being interviewed and making speaches. She also got the chance to debate, having done research to prepare. Irene expressed how she had to take a giant leap out of her comfort zone, but she was glad for the experiences she had, and what she was able to learn. Since she attended the boot camp she would like to use her new skills to help with publicity for Clark County and the State. She would like to recruit more active members to help with the Farm Bureau. <br />
<br />

</div>Jim was given the floor again to tell about the Boise Idaho Conference he attended. The theme of the conference was Thinking Oustide of the Box. There was a speaker that talked about what is going on nationally and locally to get people involved in aggriculture by using the social media. Jim said they went on an all day feild trip, veiwing the hydroelectric dam, a 5,000 cow dairy, a mint farm with 10,000 acres of mint plants, and a petting zoo. All in all it was said that Boise is a beautiful city, and Glen added that they also have a good football team!<br />
<br />
Hank then told about the State Convention and that they wanted each county to bring 4 items for a silent auction. It was decided that Glen, Hank, Womens Committee, and Young Famer Rancher would each bring one item. <br />
<br />
Other items were discussed, including brand inspections, water policies, state shooting leadership training and what would go on in the annual meeting the next week. <br />
<br />
-Just as a reminder, the video contest for the womens committee is still going on, it is a good opportunity to be apart of aggriculture and possibly even win some money!<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Small talk was made and dinner was ate, then it was time to get down to business. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Zack Allen started the discussion on the topic of social media and the importance of it in the world today by showing a video explaining the huge impact social media has had. To view this video clink on the link below. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/3SuNx0UrnEo?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">After the video Zach applied the social media specifically to the Farm Bureau by informing of the different types of social media the Farm Bureau is apart of now. This includes facebook and blogs. By doing these things, the Farm Bureau can keep people updated with what is happening, and can include more people in activities. People can also be included and stay updated with other related groups as well. For example, the NV Farm Bureau and NV Young Farmer Rancher orginizations have blogs as well. To visit the Young Farmer Rancher blog, go to <a href="http://www.nvfbyfandr.blogspot.com/">www.nvfbyfandr.blogspot.com</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Many of the older generation were quite lost with all the technology talk, but the main point of Zach's presentation was that social media is free, timely, and efficient.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Cindy Hardy who is the Nevada State Farm Bureau Womens Committee Chair, discussed the speech contest. She explained that instead of doing the speech in front of a live audience, they are having the contestants create a video. She explained that when a speech is given in front of and audience, a limited number of people can hear the speech given. But by creating a video and posting it on youtube, it can be seen by numerous people.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">There are three divisions in the video competition which are; Junior 6th-8th grades, Senior 9th-12th grades, and Young Farmer Rancher division which is ages 18 through 36. All three divisions have the topic HOW WATER BECOMES AMERICA'SFOOD. Junior has the topic, FARM SAFETY ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS. and Seniors and Young Farmer Rancher have HOW AGRICULTURE BENEFITS WILDLIFE. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">For those interested in creating a video for the contest, it is to be a well planned video 3-5 min long and submitted to Cindy Hardy by October 8. The video will be judged by the county, and the winning video from each division then gets sent to the state where it will be judged at the annual meeting. Then the winner of the video contest will be posted on youtube. First place in the county gets $100, second place ges $75, and third receives $50.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Kaley Sproul and Brooklyn Shotwell won last years video</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><object class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://2.gvt0.com/vi/VoOUAFsn_zo/0.jpg" height="266" width="320"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VoOUAFsn_zo&fs=1&source=uds" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VoOUAFsn_zo&fs=1&source=uds" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Doug Busselman was next to give his presentation, which was on Building Key Relationships For A Better Farm Bureau. He passed around a handout designed to map out the relationships people have with their congressmen and representatives. Doug expressed the importance of mapping the links in order to find out who will take the responsibility to call, and then to find out who calls you. It is important to know who knows who in order to get ideas expressed to the people who can make a difference. Doug also encouraged others to start building relationships. A relationship can start by sending a simple email, introducing yourself and thanking that person for the work they have done. It would benefit the Farm Bureau to be able to pick up the phone and call the County Commisioners, State Legistlature, or the Congressional Leaders. Doug also expressed that good relationships have a two way component, which are spending time and work at rebuilding the relationship. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The last presentation of the evening was given by Stephanie Licht. The title of her slideshow presentation was, "Are YOUR County Farm Bureau Members Telling YOU Where to Go?" She stressed the point by asking, why have an organization if we don't use our members? Stephanie expressed that members that do all the work get burned out, by sharing the work an responsibility the Farm Bureau program can continue. Having groups of 3-5 people to work on small committee projects can be most effective. It is also important for members to have some fun and recreation. Steph also stated that it is important to ASK and LISTEN to members of the community in order to find out what needs to be done, or improved`. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Thank you to Zach, Cindy, Doug, and Stephanie for the hardwork and preparation involved in putting this meeting together. I think everyone that attended would agree that there was much to learn in everything discussed. Farm Bureau members were able to rub shoulders once again learn how they can help grow a stronger Farm Bureau. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
